Happy to rain on Cup parade
Roger of Te Atatu writes: "In recent years I've met a number of new friends who are seeing NZ for the first time, and each of them has commented about how many rainbows we have here in Auckland, some stacked up in pairs and triples. So how about it? Time for a refreshing and romantic change from City of Sails to City of Rainbows? The timing would be perfect for the Rugby World Cup."
He urned that free drink
Mike O'Loughlin writes: "Your photo re the bar offering free drinks to 80-year-olds accompanied by their parents has been done before ... and failed. Some years ago, a good-humoured bar manager tried the same tactic, only to be greeted the next day by the local town soak, Cyril (82), who produced two urns containing his late Mum and Dad and drank heartily and for free for about a week until the bar manager conceded defeat and withdrew the promotion."
Safety a black-and-white issue
A reader writes: "To the middle-aged lady who flipped me off as I drove through a zebra crossing in Kohi on Wednesday morning: I didn't see you because you were dressed head to toe in black, standing against a dark backdrop. In fact, you only came to my attention as your disembodied hand raised itself to salute me. You might want to rethink your wardrobe, because dead and angry ain't a good look."
