Name-dropping bungle

In England, Islington Council officials have placed extra police patrols outside the Andover Estate and apologised to some of the residents there. Officials say they accidentally revealed the names, telephone numbers and other personal information of those who had called in with complaints about loud music, verbal abuse and other anti-social behaviour to those they accused. Ten of those accused have been banned from the area. (Source: Reason.com)

Kaiwaka lights up the drive north

Kim writes: "My husband and I were driving past Kaiwaka [20km north of Wellsford] on Wednesday night and noted an abundance of decorative lights greeting us from residential and commercial premises alike. We were wondering if this is the year-round norm for Kaiwaka and if it is an organised community effort? Certainly it gave us a lift on our trip through to Whangarei."

Pushing his luck

James Allan, 28, was sentenced to three years in prison in July for robbing a newsagents in Oxford, England. Allan's getaway was delayed when he insisted, repeatedly, on pushing the front door open when he should have been pulling. Finally, exasperated, he yanked off his balaclava, exposing his face to the surveillance camera, kicked the door, breaking the glass, and escaped. Police arrested him nearby about three hours later. (The 2000 British movie Snatch featured just such a memorable scene of push/pull helplessness.) (Source: News of the Weird)
