Cop turns chauffeur for golden oldies

"We run a motel here in Dunedin and last weekend had more than a few oldies staying so they could go to the Rod Stewart concert," writes Peter. "One older couple were concerned about how they might get to and from the concert. We organised a taxi to pick them up but the problem they would have was getting back to the motel. The taxi picked them up at the arranged time and off they went. We didn't see them again until they checked out the following morning, when I asked them what they thought of the concert. They loved every minute of it and stayed right to the end. When I asked her how they managed to get back to the motel she said, 'in a police car!' They had looked at getting a taxi but were deterred by the long queues of people at the rank so decided to walk. Since they had no idea what direction to take they asked a policeman who was parked nearby and he said 'hop in'. Feeling more than a little embarrassed by all of the stares they were getting from the crowds leaving Forsyth Barr Stadium, they mentioned to the policeman that 'with all of this traffic we are going to be stuck here for hours'. With that the policeman turned on the flashing lights and siren and drove around the lines of traffic to get them back to the motel in record time. What a fantastic way to treat our senior citizens."

Half-hearted Anzac spirit

"A joint stamp issue between New Zealand and Australia was issued and among the first day covers was this stamp," writes Ray Turner.

"In the centre is an Australian soldier. The designer of the cover must have been reminded that this was a joint issue with New Zealand. Hence a small New Zealand soldier has been squeezed in the lower corner."

Neigh bother

A reader writes: "The story about naming K Rd, in the Weekend Herald, reminds me of the tale of a chap who was late for work. When asked for an explanation, he said he had collided with a horse in Karangahape Rd. The boss replied that it should not have taken that long to clear up. The worker replied, 'Yes, but the policeman couldn't spell 'Karangahape', so we had to drag the horse round into Queen St!'"
