“Out of the blue, I heard someone yelling [ obscenities].”
He said he then heard two “very loud bangs”.
“From my crime-TV-watching it sounded like both barrels of a shotgun.”
He said he did not hear any screech of tyres or any commotion after those loud bangs, so did not initially think it was a shooting.
However, he realised it was something serious when armed police arrived in the area soon afterwards.
He could see police at the house, investigating what appeared to be a broken window and “a few pellets lodged in the slats of the wood”.
The resident said police went door-to-door asking about the incident on Monday night.
He said it was his understanding that the residents of the impacted home were relatively new to the area, and he had seen children there in the past.
He said it had “always been a really nice area” and he had never heard of a shooting in their immediate neighbourhood before, apart from a year ago when a man was shot about a kilometre away on Tait Drive.
A police spokesperson said armed police responded “as a precaution”.
“Hawke’s Bay Police are investigating a firearms incident in Greenmeadows [on Monday night] and are appealing to the public for information,” a police statement said.
“Shots were fired at a home on Clement Pl, though thankfully no one was injured.”
No arrests had been made as at today midday, and inquiries “are ongoing to locate the offender”.
Police said they do not believe there were any risks to the wider public.
Police would like to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time, or anyone who might have CCTV footage that could help their investigation.
