The family of the man has thanked emergency services.
"We would like to thank everyone involved in assisting our son at the scene including the Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance, police and St John," they said in a statement released today.
"Our thanks also go to the staff at Waikato Hospital - from the emergency department through to the surgical team, intensive care and high dependency units and now the trauma team who have taken over his care."
The shooting was one of two incidents on Thursday night.
While searching the Matamata and Waharoa areas, police found the body of another man at an address on Tower Road in Matamata.
Police said the death of the 21-year-old man, who had suffered a gunshot wound, was not suspicious.
