Shot man found in car outside Auckland medical centre

A man shot in the leg and then abandoned in a car in the Auckland suburb of Glen Innes this morning is believed to know his shooter, police say.

The man - believed to be in his late 30s or early 40s - was found with with a serious leg injury in the back seat of a silver Holden Commodore car in Bradley Lane in Glen Innes about 9.30am.

Detective Senior Sergeant John Sutton said police believed they knew who the victim was and were making inquiries to confirm his identity.

"We don't believe this was a random incident and it's very likely the victim knows who shot him,'' he said.

"We'd like to hear from anyone we haven't already located who knows anything about what happened to this man and who was responsible for it.''

The shot man was found when his cries for help were heard by workers from a nearby construction site.

Witness Chris Webb said he heard the man's screams coming from the abandoned car.

"We went out to have a look and the guy just kept screaming, 'I've been shot, I've been shot'.''

When Mr Webb opened the car's door he saw blood coming from a wound in the man's upper left leg, he told 3 News.

Staff at a medical centre on nearby Line Rd were then alerted and assisted the man while an ambulance was en route.

He is now in a serious condition at Auckland Hospital after undergoing surgery.
