SH3 blocked by overturned truck

An overturned truck with two trailer units has rolled on State Highway 3 between Wanganui and Waverley this morning, blocking the road.

Police have had to divert traffic through a paddock and along the back of Tauranga Ika Marae, coming out on Pakaraka Rd.

The accident happened about 6.30am this morning.

The Mainfreight truck has two trailers. It is believed to be carrying soda ash and there is a "corrosive material" sticker on the truck. Very little of the soda ash had spilled.

The crash has blocked both lanes of the highway. The truck was travelling north to New Plymouth.

No other vehicles were involved and the driver was not injured, police said.

A crane has been brought in to clear the truck and trailer units from the road. It is expected to take until at least midday to clear the road.
