Five patients have been discharged from hospital after a bedroom caught fire in Manurewa this morning.

Seven children and one adult were initially treated for smoke inhalation after the 4am blaze, with five admitted to Middlemore Hospital.

A Counties Manukau District Health Board spokeswoman said the patients were discharged shortly after 9am.

A fire communications spokesman said the bedroom fire was thought to have been caused by a faulty electric blanket.

Two fire engines attended the incident on Jenkins Place at 4.06am, and seven patients were taken to Middlemore Hospital by ambulance with minor injuries.

A spate of electric blanket fires have sparked a reminder from firefighters about looking after the devices properly this winter.

Electric blanket safety tips:

• Always ensure it's laid straight on the bed.

• Make sure it is not underneath heavy items such as underlays, woollen duvets.

• Only use it to warm the bed, don't have it on all night.

• Replace it at least every three years.

• Get the electric blanket serviced by a professional once a year.
