Set up begins for Float festival and NZ Bomb Comp at Rotorua's Blue Lake

There's something in the water at Tikitapu (Blue Lake) ahead of this week's Flava NZ Bomb Comp and ZM Float festival events.

Over the next four days thousands of people will descend on the lake for three days of bombing and a one-day music festival.

Yesterday workers were seen setting up the scaffolding for bombing tower which will be open from tomorrow afternoon for casual bombs. .

Bombers can jump from platforms either 2m, 5m, 8m or 10m high.

The bomb tower is open for casual bombing on Thursday, Friday and Sunday morning, and for the competition itself from 12.30pm on Sunday.

Inspector Brendon Keenan from the Rotorua police said police would have a presence throughout the weekend.

He also said Tikitapu was a hotspot for vehicle thefts, because of its popularity as a tourist location.

Keenan said police's other concern was ensuring event goers parked responsibly.

"There is only one way in and one way out to some of those lakes communities and it is really dry out there at the moment, so if there is a fire or any other form of emergency, it would be a disaster if the road wasn't clear and free. We also need to be able to park as close as we can to the event for the same reasons."

On Saturday the ZM music festival Float will take over Blue Lake.

So far 3940 Float tickets have sold, and event director Lucy Wymer said she was "stoked" about that.

"It's always really hard to tell if we will sell out but sales are going really similarly to last year, which suggests that yes we are."

February 14 - Casual bombing from 2pm to 8pm
February 15 - Casual Bombing from 12pm to 6pm
February 16- Float Concert (Float ticket required - www.grabone.co.nz) 10am to 6pm
February 17 - Casual Bombing from 10am to 12pm then Bomb Comp starts at 12.30pm
