Set for wheely good race

Get your wheelbarrows ready.

The annual Great Carterton Wheelbarrow Race is to be held this Saturday from 10am at Memorial Square.

The race, sponsored by local businesses, is a fundraising opportunity for schools and community groups.

Greg Lang, who organised the 13km pub-to-pub race from Gladstone to Carterton, said this year's event was shaping up to be a great day.

"A lot of people just turn up on the day but it's looking good," he said.

Last year's men's champions, Gavin Graham and Mark Eagle were looking to defend their title after winning last time in 52mins and 22secs.

Mr Lang said the main challengers would be Roman Travers and Paul Furkett.

In the women's race, previous winners Ali Lang and Maria Hull are again competing and mixed title holders Graham Butcher and Brendan Farley will also compete.

Aside from the endurance race, there will be races around the square and other competitions such as strongman and best decorated wheelbarrow.

Mr Lang said they had been contacted by people in Australia who organise a similar race.
