Motorists are being warned to expect lengthy delays between Wellington and Lower Hutt after a single-vehicle crash.

Police were called to the scene near Petone at 5.17am.

One person has been seriously injured in the crash.

State Highway 2 heading northbound near Petone is closed as a result.

State Highway 2 southbound has one lane open, although motorists are being advised to expect heavy delays.

The Serious Crash Unit has been notified of the incident.
