Hato Hone St John confirmed crews transported four patients away – two in critical condition and two in moderate condition.
A Great North Rd resident told the Herald one car had its roof completely cut off.
“Sadly there wasn’t much left of the car,” she said.
“My neighbour said it was an almighty crash that shook her to the core.
“It’s a really busy road, so it’s sad to see that this could happen on a Sunday to multiple vehicles.”

A Herald photographer at the scene said Great North Rd remains closed as the Serious Crash Unit completes its investigation.
“A specialist Fire and Emergency lighting unit from Te Atatu Fire Station is providing lighting support for the crash investigators.
“Traffic management is now in place, taking over from Fire and Emergency operational support personnel who had been manning the cordons since the crash occurred.”
