Last Saturday saw both the men's and women's Summer Cups finalised, with good scoring continuing to be a feature of the play.
The best women's score on the day was the 43 points scored by Anita Karaitiana. She was followed on 41 points by Rose Alexander, Michelle Coley, Cilva Richmond and
Fiona Samuel, while Evelyn Munn had 40 points.
The final totals for the Summer Cup saw Fiona Samuel run out the winner with a best two round total of 86 points to just head off Cilva Richmond on 85, and Rose Alexander and Anita Karaitiana on 84.
The best round of the day in the club competition was the 46 points scored by Kevin Hunter in taking out the men's first group. Mark Schultz was in second place in this group with 44 points, with Anita Karaitiana just one point back. There were another four players in this group with 41 points each, but they did not get a look in as far as the day's prizes went.
In the second group, Syd Whittington took the honours with 42 points, from Thomas Tiopira and Fiona Samuel getting the nod of those finishing on 41 points to make the prizes.
The men's Summer Cup final standing were also close, with Mark Schultz heading the field with 84 points from Darryl Coley on 83 and Graham Duckett on 80.
There were six holes in two on the day, but special mention must be made of Rob McKelvey's one, as that was scored on the first hole. The other holes in two were scored by Thomas Tiopira, Fiona Samuel, Anita Karaitiana, Graham Duckett and Kevin Hunter.
Sunday was the clubs opening day for the 2005 season, with the competition being a mixed Fourball best ball stableford. The best score in that competition was the 54 points scored by Evelyn and Jim Munn. That was two points ahead of Di Hunter and Maurice O'Reilly, while Anita Karaitiana and Alf Puhara were third on 51 points.
For those players who did not have partners, the competition was a stableford round. Ron Hutcheson led the way with 46 points to just head off Alf Puhara with 45 points. Darryl Coley was in third place with 43 points, with Brian Chappell in fourth place on 41 points.
Holes in two were scored by Darryl Coley, Alf Puhara, Terry Fleet, Graeme Dick, Ngaire Graham and Ray Loader.
On Tuesday, the veterans group played in a stableford round. The best round of the daywas the 43 points scored by Daphne Jordan in taking out the second women's group, while Yvonne Allsworth and Cilva Richmond shared second place on 41 points. Maureen Flynn had the best score of 39 points in the top group, followed by Janet Shaw on 36 and Mei Hakaraia on 35 points.
Fred Brittain, Peter Campbell and Bill all scored 38 points in the top men's group. In the second group, Trevor Oliver headed the field with 41 points, which was one better than Ray Loader, while third place was shared by Alby Haley and Bill Christiansen on 39 points.
The women's nearest to the pins went to Daphne Jordan on the third hole and Maureen Flynn on the sixth, while the men's ones went to Jon Kopua on the sixth and Fred Brittain on the seventh.
Next week's competition for the veterans group will be a bisque par round.
Golf can at times be a frustrating game, but it also has its fair share of memorable quotes. The notable golf coach Harvey Pennick once said "Golf has probably kept more people sane than psychiatrists have." Walter Hagen once said "What a shame to waste those great shots on the practice tee."
But perhaps one quote that many golfers should keep in mind when they do not have the best of starts to their round and this one came from the legendary Sam Snead - "No matter what happens - never give up a hole... In tossing in your cards after a bad beginning you also undermine your whole game, because to quit between tee and green is more habit-forming than drinking a highball before breakfast."
This coming week-end sees the women getting their season under way with a LGU round on Saturday, which is also the first round of the Nett Aggregate. This is also the first qualifying round for the Faulknors Service Station Shoot Out.
For the men, Saturday's competition is a medal round and a Faulknors Service Station Shoot Out qualifying round, as well as the first of three rounds for the Nett Aggregate trophy.
Sunday is Waitangi Day, and the annual tournament for the Dick Haira Trophy.
