Ruptured gas main in central Tauranga

Emergency services are responding to a gas leak in central Tauranga.

A fire communications spokeswoman said a digger hit the gas line.

Police and fire were in attendance and the Devonport Rd end of 2nd Avenue had been blocked off to traffic.

She said people could expect disruption in the area, particularly around Devonport Rd.

She said no evacuation had been carried out to her knowledge.

Earlier: Firefighters are at the scene of Cameron Rd and 3rd Ave after calls of the leak about 11.10am.

A fire communications spokesman said contractors working in the area had accidentally dug up the gas main.
