Internet forums were abuzz with speculation about the identity of the mystery "sporting legend" set to appear in the opening ceremony.
Details around the event have been kept under tight wraps by organisers.
But around half of the comments posted on the Rugby World Cup Facebook page were tipping Jonah
Lomu to be the secret star of the show.
Dan Freeman's post was typical. "More than likely Jonah. Granted there are better players about but in terms of international recognition Jonah is an institution."
Others suggested Sir Colin Meads, Sean Fitzpatrick or even Waka Nathan.
