Given the option of an island escape or attending the final, only 32 per cent would opt to be at Eden Park on October 23.
Tourism Industry Association chief executive Tim Cossar said despite the apparent Rugby World Cup fatigue, once the tournament starts on Friday the majority of Kiwis will be watching.
"The survey found that 73 per cent of New Zealanders are intending to watch at least some of this year's Rugby World Cup, in the stadium or on the screen," he said, adding 18 per cent of Kiwis will be attending live matches.
According to the survey, 8 per cent of New Zealanders are attending one game, 4 per cent are attending two, 2 per cent are going to three games, 1 per cent are going to four and 3 per cent are attending five or more matches.
While there are some cheap deals around for non-rugby fans keen to get out of the country for the tournament, only 2 per cent of respondents have plans to escape overseas while the World Cup is held.
Respondents were interviewed online from August 11 to 21, and the margin of error is 3.2 per cent.
