Rotorua child dies at daycare centre

Rotorua police are investigating a mysterious death of a toddler.

Police were reportedly called to ABC daycare on Monokia Street just after two yesterday afternoon after two and a half year old James Kereama failed to wake from a nap.

Officer in charge Detective Senior Sergeant John Wilson says ambulance staff tried to revive the young boy but he was pronounced dead shortly after.

He says at the moment the death is being treat as unexplained - not suspicious.

A post-mortem is understood to have happened today by a specialist paediatric pathologist in Wellington.
