Rotorua airport delays criticised

Tourism leaders have criticised the Rotorua Regional Airport Company for delaying a $1.8 million terminal upgrade, saying the airport gives tourists a "third world" impression.

Polynesian Spa director Martin Lobb said arriving at the airport was like stepping from the first world into the third world and Rotorua Tourism Advisory Board chairman Neville Nicholson said it was the weak link among airports in New Zealand.

But Rotorua Regional Airport board chairman Neil Oppatt said the board had a construction budget to meet and would not go over it, even if it meant delays.
