The surf at Riversdale Beach began picking up yesterday after several days of high winds and flat waters at the resort.
Strong northwesterlies and a lack of waves kept swimmers and surfers from the water over the past few days at Riversdale Beach, said Mike Taylor, Riversdale Surf Lifesaving Clubcaptain.
"The surf has just started to lift again after a few days of being dead calm and flat."
He said there had been no rescue calls over the holiday break so far and just over 170 people were on the beach by mid-morning yesterday.
The Nippers Programme that teaches young swimmers beach and water skills was in full swing and the head count at the beach yesterday was heartening despite intermittent surf conditions.
He said just over 100 people were on the beach and 52 in the water on Wednesday, while on Tuesday there had been close to 200 people on the beach and more than 60 in the water.
On Monday there were just over 190 on the beach and 64 people in the water.
