Police are in despair of "impatient" motorcyclists who brazenly overtake cars on the notorious Rimutaka Hill Rd.
Police, Wellington Free Ambulance and the Featherston Fire Brigade were called to the crash scene near the top of the Rimutaka Hill about 1.30pm on Sunday, after a motorcyclist and a car collidedalmost head-on.
Sergeant Tim Crum of Featherston Police said a group of three motorcyclists en route to Wellington began overtaking the car in front by crossing into the opposing lane.
While the other two motorcyclists "passed by safely", the third driver, carrying a passenger, came close to hitting a Subaru Forester head-on.
The driver swerved "at the last minute" to avoid hitting the motorcycle - which "skidded" along the side of the car.
Mr Crum said the motorcycle sustained only "moderate damage", but the impact of the collision blew out two of the car's tyres and had left a long, deep gouge across the driver's side.
The male motorcyclist had injured his shoulder when the motorcycle went to ground and was taken to Wairarapa Hospital.
The female motorist got "a hell of a fright", but was otherwise "good as gold."
Mr Crum said the the motorcyclists' risky behaviour was disappointing - especially considering there was a passing lane not far up ahead they could have used.
"If they'd just been patient, obeyed the road rules, and hadn't tried to overtake early, we wouldn't be here," he said.
"Unfortunately, this happens a lot. He had a pretty lucky escape."
A spokesperson from Wairarapa Hospital said the motorcyclist and passenger were treated in the emergency department and his injuries were not serious, but could not confirm if they had yet been released.
After the crash, fire crews helped direct traffic - with assistance from other motorcyclists.
Drivers returning from Wairarapa endured long tailbacks while the vehicles were cleared.
It is not known if the motorcyclist will be charged.
