A man who sped through Featherston at speeds faster than 100km/h on his motorcycle was sentenced in Masterton District Court on Tuesday to community detention and community work.
Jayden Andrew Kerr-Manning, 18, had pleaded guilty to reckless driving, driving while forbidden, failing to stop for police and breach of communitywork.
Judge Chris Tuohy said Kerr-Manning had been seen by police riding his motorcycle in the early hours of the morning of May 17, along Watt St, Featherston.
He had failed to stop in response to police lights and had "gone through intersections at speeds over 100km/h".
"If there had been any other innocent poor motorists on those intersections there would have been death or injury - probably yours, because you were the one on the motorbike," Judge Tuohy said.
Police followed Kerr-Manning for about five minutes and covered around 8km before he "lost control at a slow speed and fell off".
Judge Tuohy also sentenced Kerr-Manning for a careless driving charge dating back to July 12 last year, when he was "driving like an idiot over the Rimutakas". A related charge of intentionally damaging a police vehicle arose when Kerr-Manning "kicked out" at the console of a police car after being taken into custody.
Judge Tuohy sentenced Kerr-Manning to four months' community detention, nine months' supervision and disqualified him from driving for 12 months, telling him: "You need at least that much time to gain maturity before you can be in charge of a motor vehicle."
