The Life Flight Trust rescue helicopter took a 6-year-old motocross rider to Wellington Hospital with moderate chest injuries in received after a fall during a race.
A 6-year-old motocross rider received chest injuries when he was run over after falling from his machine during a race near Martinborough on Saturday.
Martinborough senior firefighter Dean Dibona said a volunteer fire crew went to the scene at a Hinakura farm on Longbush Rd, where an off-duty paramedic wastreating the boy about 11.30am.
Mr Dibona said he was told the boy had fallen from his motorcycle during a supervised event at the race day, which was being held on a farm property.
A competitor in the race had unintentionally ridden his machine across the boy's chest after he fell, Mr Dibona said.
He said the paramedic was a volunteer at the event and the boy was treated at the scene before he was taken by the Life Flight Westpac rescue helicopter with moderate injuries to Wellington Hospital.
"He was obviously in a bit of pain but was pretty quiet."
Mr Dibona said the races were an organised event, where it was common to have off-duty paramedic or first aid personnel who volunteered as first response helpers.
