Restaurant couple sentenced for fraud

A couple who ran a Chinese restaurant in Wellington were yesterday sentenced to community service for tax evasion and fraud.

Ying Wai Chiu and Sun Ho Chiu had earlier pleaded guilty in Wellington District Court to providing false income tax and GST returns and fraudulently obtaining Family Support.

Investigators discovered the business did not have any systems to record cash transactions and was reporting considerably lower profit than usual in the restaurant trade.
