Is the humble kiwi “doggy bag” about to fall victim to increasingly tough food safety rules? Tristram Clayton talks to Nicola Waldren from the Restaurant Association of New Zealand to find out more.

A Kapiti Coast restaurant singled out for banning doggy bags is by no means the only one with almost 50 others in Auckland and Wellington appearing to hold a similar policy.

Paraparaumu restaurant The Social said its "no takeaways" policy was because they didn't want to risk diners falling ill after eating leftovers.

While it is only one of two in the Paraparaumu area listed on restaurant site Zomato as having no takeaways, in the country's two biggest cities numerous others appear to have a similar stance.

While it's not clear if this is a strict rule for all the restaurants, the Herald is aware of a number of those listed that either enforce it as a policy, or strongly discourage takeaways.

Of the 30 most popular fine-dining restaurants in Auckland, 29 were listed on the restaurant directory site as having "no takeaways" available. Fifteen of the 30 most popular dining restaurants were also listed as not having takeaways as an option.

Mekong Baby in Ponsonby, Auckland is one of those that refused to give its patrons doggy bags.

Owner Dominque Parat said it was a clear policy that was written all over his food and drinks menu and customers were often reminded if it looked like their order was bigger than they could chew.

"We are quite cautious about it," he said. "If we see they are ordering too much we mention it to them and we say we don't do doggie bags."

Parat said it was mainly to do with health and safety, but said it was also bad for business if any cases of food poisoning were linked to his restaurant.

"The food's already been sitting on the table for about an hour, then you get a doggy bag, then it sits for half an hour on the table, sits in the car, then gets eaten a couple of days later," he said. "I don't want to risk food poisoning."

In Wellington, 24 of the 30 most popular fine-dining restaurants appeared to have a similar policy, as well as eight of its 30 most popular dining restaurants.

In Christchurch, 19 of the 30 most popular fine-dining restaurants indicated a doggy bag wasn't an option, with eight of its 30 most popular dining restaurants indicating the same.

In Dunedin there were 17 listed as having no takeaways available.

Owner of The Social, Phil Ryan, told Fairfax it was a food safety issue.

"If someone takes food home, doesn't heat it properly and gets sick, they'll probably blame us."

However, the policy appears to have sparked more than a little bit of displeasure amongst guests, with two reviewers on Zomato in the last week expressing their dissatisfaction at The Social's policy.

Most readers that have written into the Herald seemed equally opposed to the "no takeaway" policy.

Jeannette Smith Senior said it was a waste of good food if people weren't allowed to take their leftovers.

"Often people actually want their food for their dog or cat."

Though at least one agreed with the restaurant's call to ban doggy bags.

"If someone falls ill from eating the food 2 or 3 days later, it's the restaurant who the health authorities blame, not the consumer," said Graeme Eatin.

Most felt having paid the price they were entitled to do what they wanted with their meals.

The Ministry of Primary Industries said businesses were entitled to refuse leftovers be taken home.

However, it also said food taken home from a restaurant typically becomes the responsibility of the patron.

"If you take the food away, the safety of that food is up to you."
