Rescue centre takes on dumped puppies

Three abandoned puppies who ended up in the Masterton district pound can look forward to a brighter future.

A dog rescue centre in Otaki has taken them on to train them and hopefully find them homes.

Masterton man Devan Simmonds, told the Times-Age two weeks ago that he had discovered the starving pups dumped in bushes near Hood Aerodrome while walking his dog.

He said one puppy came out of the bush and approached his dog, Frog, then the other two came out and walked up to him.

"Initially the puppies were pretty timid but they warmed up quickly as soon as they got some attention. "They were excited to see someone," he said.

The underweight puppies were taken to SPCA Wairarapa, but the centre was full so they were taken to the pound.

Masterton District Council spokesman Sam Rossiter-Stead said the dogs had been cared for in the puppy room at the pound.

He said the council always tried to find new homes for dogs that were of breeds suitable for rehoming.

"They're not going to be destroyed so that is fantastic."

He said whenever lost or abandoned dogs appeared in the Times-Age there was often a happy ending.

"We're really grateful for that and I'm sure the dogs are too."
