Earlier reports of a gunman in Wellington this evening were a false alarm, police say.
A spokeswoman confirmed around 8:30pm that officers had found a man meeting the description, but he was not carrying a rifle as had been reported by a member of the public.
A Mt Victoria localhad reported seeing a man carrying a rifle on Pirie St at 6:18pm.
