Recidivist drink-driver Wade Michael Churchward has been denied bail until he has been sentenced as he poses a serious risk to the community, a judge says.
He drove away from pursuing police at high speed, and eventually crashed into a ditch, after weaving into the path of oncoming traffic andturning suddenly on State Highway 2, losing control of the car he was driving. It was his seventh drink-driving conviction, the court heard.
The 34-year-old Featherston dairy farmer was to be sentenced by Judge Barbara Morris in Masterton District Court on Wednesday after previously pleading guilty to drink-driving with an alcohol reading of 1100mcg and a charge of dangerous driving.
Judge Morris said she was not able to sentence him at this time until another charge before the court was resolved.
She noted he had six previous drink-driving convictions.
The incident happened on Saturday, March 8 just after 8pm and when Churchward was arrested he told police he didn't know why he had driven under the influence of alcohol because several people had offered him a lift home that night.
Churchward has six previous drink-driving convictions dating back to 1998 including one in 2008 when he was jailed.
