Rekindle, a waste diversion social enterprise best known for its work with earthquake-damaged buildings, is opening two exhibitions in Auckland.
Juliet Arnott initially started Rekindle to salvage timber from red zone residential demolition in Christchurch and turn it into furniture, interiors, sculpture and jewelery.
"Primarily when establishing Rekindle, I wasmotivated by proving that this material could look beautiful and be functional in a new use, and to show that to the world," Rekindle founder Juliet Arnott explained in a recent video for Yealands.
"I'd like every community in New Zealand to find value in the wood that's going to waste and to turn that into therapeutic and creative opportunities."
The enterprise is now expanding to other materials and locations.
An exhibition opening tonight at Allpress Gallery in Freemans Bay will showcase furniture, clothes and shoes (including the planter box pictured below) made from a range of materials salvaged from industrial areas in Auckland.
Rekindle will also run a pop-up store in Ponsonby Central for two weeks from 25 October, featuring new products from Christchurch and Auckland.
The enterprise has previously been involved in Whole House Reuse, an attempt to show that nearly all the materials from a red-zoned home could be salvaged.
The exhibition tonight is supported by Auckland Council's Waste Minimisation and Innovation Fund, which is part of the council's drive to achieve zero waste in Auckland by 2040. Rekindle is also backed by the Akina Foundation.
