Reikorangi Rd fire: Crews contain blaze at former religious camp

Eight fire crews are battling a blaze at a house in Waikanae near Wellington.

The fire was reported at 10.15am on Reikorangi Rd.

The property is said to be a former religious camp and the site of the historic Union Parish Church.

The church was relocated from Manaia, Taranaki to the Reikorangi Christian College on Reikorangi Rd and has been listed by Heritage New Zealand since 1983.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand said eight crews had been sent to the scene from Waikanae, Paraparaumu, Ōtaki, Porirua, Paekākāriki and Wellington City.

Among the units attending are a water tanker and an appliance containing extra breathing apparatus.

A Fire and Emergency spokesman said the fire was “contained but not extinguished”.

Staff remained at the scene.
