The Bay of Plenty Regional Council is concerned about the integrity of the floodwall at Thornton School near Whakatane.
While it is being reinforced with rock, they say there is a likelihood it may fail.

"As a precaution, residents living in that area will be evacuated," a spokesperson posted on the council's Facebook page.
"We'll keep the road open as long as possible, but it will be closed if the floodwall does fail."
