Eight records were broken - six of them in field events - when the Wairarapa inter-collegiate track and field championships were held at Makoura College on Wednesday.

National age-group representative Alex Fafeita (Wairarapa College), who has made a habit of setting new marks over the past few years, continued the trend in the senior boys shot put with a put of 17.22m and the discus with a throw of 51.13m

The shot put events provided three of the records, the other two coming from Chester Rothery (Kuranui) with a put of 12.22m in the junior boys section and Katie Smith (Wairarapa College) with a 13.08m effort in the intermediate girls division.

Kuranui's Connor Henare posted his record in the intermediate boys triple jump with a distance of 12.40m and Finn Yeats (Rathkeale) did likewise in the junior boys high jump with a height of 1.63m.

The versatility of Yeats was remarkable as he also won two individual titles on the track over 100m and 200m, was a member of the successful Rathkeale 4 x 100m relay team and placed second in the shot put.

Two of the region's star athletes, Stevie Paine (Wairarapa College) and Sian Chapman (Chanel), were the record-breakers on the track, Paine with her 11mins 8secs in the senior girls 3000m and Chapman with her 12.30secs in the intermediate girls 100m.

Results (W, Wairarapa; C, Chanel; K, Kuranui; SM, St Matthews; S, Solway; T, Tararua; R, Rathkeale):
