A record number of competitors contested the annual Wairarapa secondary schools track and field championships held on the Pelorus all-weather track at the Colin Pugh Sports Bowl in Masterton, with all eight Wairarapa colleges being strongly represented.
And it wasn't only in quantity that new marks were set,with three record-breaking performances also being registered.
St Matthew's College pupil Kate Plimmer was on fire in the senior girls' triple jump where her best leap of 10.94m bettered the old record by 73cm.
Powerful field eventer Katie Smith from Wairarapa College demonstrated her class in the senior girls' shot put with a put of 11.58m, 48cm further than the previous best.
The only male to claim a new record was Brock Loader from Kuranui College whose best leap in the junior boys' triple jump measured 11.21m, 5cm better than the existing mark.
A "first" for these championships was the staging of open hammer throw events with the honours going there to Emma Kuruszona of Wairarapa College and Tom Quinn of Rathkeale College.
