Record alcohol-related arrests in Whangarei

A record number of people were arrested by police in Whangarei for alcohol-related incidents over the weekend.

Most of the 42 people put in police cells for being drunk and disorderly were under the age of 20.

The previous weekend, a local teenager died outside a popular nightclub following a scuffle with another man.

Whangarei mayor Pamela Peters said such alcohol-related problems are common in cities of a certain size and is calling for improved behaviour.
