Rants&Raves: 'Shocking' habit only in NZ

Why does Auckland Council refuse to clean up its beaches after a storm? Takapuna Beach is covered in piles of stinky seaweed even while hosting two major sporting events over the weekend plus being a playground to hundreds of beachgoers. This is one of Auckland's top tourist destinations.

I'd like to give a huge shout-out to the lovely woman who served me at Mobil, Lincoln Rd, on Saturday. I filled my car with petrol as usual but when I reached into the car to get my wallet I found I had left it at home. Embarrassed, I walked into the shop to admit my dilemma. Sarbjit was so kind about it, and offered to let me go home and retrieve the wallet (an hour return trip). On further discussions we worked out a better solution with internet banking which I was able to do with my phone. Transaction complete, I was on my way - very relieved! I received a text an hour later from Sarbjit to thank me for shopping with them and to please come again - the thanks was all mine to her.

What do those people who control the blinking on-ramp lights on the Southern Motorway do all day? On Sunday at 4.40pm, there was hardly any traffic going north towards the CBD, yet the Greenlane on-ramp light was blinking away anyway.

I would like to sincerely thank James and Jason who saw my 14-year-old son walking along the highway 3km north of Wairakei on Easter Sunday. The fact that you turned around after "seeing something that just wasn't right", stopping to talk to my teenager and returning him safely to me is a powerful thing. From the bottom of my heart, thank you! Warmest regards from my whanau.

Thank you to the great guys at the BP Clifton service station in Takapuna. My vehicle died this week (starter motor) after filling with petrol. The service station attendants could not have been more helpful - they pushed my vehicle out of the lane (no mean feat as it is a large 4WD), tried to jump start it for me and offered free coffee while I waited for the AA. They were so helpful and friendly.
