In response to Wendy's rant yesterday, there is NO traffic light control turning left from Ascot Ave to Green Lane East. It is a Give Way. The problem is people trying to turn left insist on waiting at a clear Give Way because they want to try to cut across three lanes into a lane that has a 200m queue of backed-up traffic. Learn the rules of the road, then rant.

Matakana is a very special place! In a two-day visit we had two unfortunate mishaps. In a predicament of our own making, we phoned the Matakana Motel for help. Their response reflected warm understanding, generosity and practical assistance - all on the phone without ever having met us! Then we lost a wallet and the next day we had a message from the Plume Cafe. A young staff member had found it and passed it to the manager. Graciousness, courtesy and kindness; and this will be our lasting impression of Matakana.

Cara says why don't people just politely ask students to give their seat up? Come on, Cara, the point is the students should offer although they probably don't know what is going on around their little world. And if someone did ask, even politely, the chances are they would be told where to go!

On Sunday, a car knocked me down running on a green pedestrian light on Titirangi Rd. The lady who looked after me while the ambulance came was the most amazing, kind, lovely woman. I didn't get her name but I'm incredibly grateful for her help.

My wife and I were caught in a horrendous crush on the concourse under the ASB stand at Eden Park on Saturday night. We couldn't move and could hardly breathe. It was unbelievably scary and dangerous and from what I could see was all due to bad planning. Our tickets encouraged us to use virtually any entrance then walk around the concourse to our seats. What a joke. And don't get me started on the loudspeakers.

After landing in Auckland on a domestic flight, I was very grateful to the Air New Zealand cabin crew member who helped my slightly wobbly self (MS, not alcohol) to my parked car. Thank you for understanding that I did not want to use a wheelchair, but preferred to walk slowly.
