Rail emergency in Wellington closes State Highway 1

Police are responding to an incident on the railway tracks at Kaiwharawhara in Wellington, which was reported at 8.45am.

State Highway 1 is partially blocked northbound in one lane.

Rail services are being replaced by buses between Wellington and Petone, as are trains between Petone and Upper Hutt.

Commuters have been told to expect delays.

Police said inquiries are ongoing.
