Actors, artists, musicians, a racehorse trainer and a mathematician are among more than 200 New Zealanders recognised in the Queen's Birthday and Golden Jubilee Honours.
The Queen approved about 40 more awards than usual to mark her jubilee.
Four "Additional Members" have been made to the country's highest honour, the Order of
New Zealand.
Dame Catherine Tizard, former Mayor of Auckland and the first woman Governor-General (1990-96), was appointed for services to community and public life. Dame Ann Ballin is a campaigner for justice for crime victims. Jurist Lord Cooke of Thorndon and Maori academic and Waitangi Tribunal expert Sir Hugh Kawharu were similarly honoured.
Two new appointments as Principal Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit were Sir Patrick Goodman, founder of Goodman Fielder Wattie, and Sir Ivor Richardson, who has retired after 24 years as a Court of Appeal judge.
Rotorua kuia Dorothy Mihinui, known as "Guide Bubbles of Whakarewarewa", was appointed a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Maori, tourism and the community.
Fellow appointees were Dunedin mayor Sukhi Turner and Dr Margaret Sparrow, a leader in the family planning movement.
Dr David Mauger, of the Starship children's hospital, who performed the first bone-marrow transplant in this country, was another of the six distinguished companions, with Professor Vaughan Jones, whose mathematical work is being used to understand the complex "knotted" configuration of DNA.
Fiordland conservationist and tourism pioneer Leslie Hutchins was also made a distinguished companion.
Les Mills, former Auckland mayor, Olympian and founder of the Les Mills World of Fitness chain, was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
Murray Ball, the creator of Footrot Flats, became an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his 40 years' work as a cartoonist.
Actors Miranda Harcourt and Peter Vere-Jones were similarly honoured, as were author Elizabeth Knox (The Vintner's Luck), painters Sylvia Siddell and John Parker, and sculptor Greer Twiss.
Racing industry figures made officers included Cambridge trainer Sheila Laxon, whose mare Ethereal won the Caulfield-Melbourne Cup double last year, and Peter Vela, chairman of New Zealand Bloodstock.
Yvonne Willering, who coached the Silver Ferns netball team from 1997 to 2001, was also made an officer.
Co-founder of World, Denise L'Estrange-Corbet, was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to fashion design. Singer and songwriter Wayne Mason, who had the 1970 hit Nature, was similarly honoured.
Former Split Enz band member Mike Chunn was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the music industry.
Sir Hugh Kawharu, of Auckland, is emeritus professor of Maori Studies at Auckland University and author of many books, including the country's leading text on Maori land.
Since 1978 he has been chairman of the Ngati Whatua o Orakei Maori Trust Board as part of his 50 years working to restore the mana of his tribe.
Sir Hugh said yesterday that he was humbled by the honour, and paid tribute to his late wife, Freda, who died 19 months ago.
He said he understood the honour was for services generally to New Zealand in his role as interpreter, mediator and liaising between Maori and local authorities.
Lord Cooke of Thorndon said from his London home that his appointment had "great significance" for him because New Zealand was still his home.
He is regarded as one of the foremost jurists NZ has produced.
