Quake rattles Hanmer Springs and North Canterbury

An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.5 on the Richter scale shook Hanmer Springs and North Canterbury early today.

The quake, centred 20km north of Hanmer Springs at a focal depth of 12km, was recorded at 6.51am, the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences, said in a statement.

It was likely to have been felt throughout North Canterbury.
