Quad bike accident: Teen found dead outside medical centre

A teenage boy who died following a quad bike accident on a farm near Kaikohe early this morning has been named by police.

He was 14-year-old Robert McKenzie.

Police said Robert, also known as Robbie, appeared to have died after his bike rolled into a ditch and trapped him.

Robert was found by a family member and taken to a medical centre in Kaikohe early this morning, police said.

The centre was closed, but ambulance staff arrived and carried out CPR for some time before he was pronounced dead.

Police said Robert's death had been referred to the coroner and WorkSafe New Zealand was also investigating.

The death is the third serious quad bike incident in a week.

On Tuesday, a farm owner died after a quad bike rolled on his farm in Carterton and he became trapped beneath it.

Hamish McLennan, 57, was spraying weeds when the accident happened.

On Sunday, a 2-year-old boy was knocked unconscious in a quad bike incident in Central Hawke's Bay. He has since been discharged from hospital.
