Qantas is holding a 72-hour sale on flights, with fares between New Zealand and Australia as low as $219.

Flights on sale include departures from Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown, with destinations including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

The newly launched Auckland to Adelaide route is also included in the sale.

Cam Wallace, chief executive of Qantas International, said: “We know our customers love when we offer sale fares across the Tasman.

“This sale not only includes great fares to some of the newest destinations to join the Qantas international network from New Zealand, such as Adelaide and Perth, but also has fares in Premium Economy on some flights to Sydney and Brisbane with our 787 Dreamliner now flying almost daily from Auckland.”

The sale comes as Qantas prepares to launch new direct flights from Auckland to Perth on December 7, which the airline says will open “seamless one-stop connections for New Zealanders to London, Paris and Rome”.

The new route will also make for convenient travel to Johannesburg on Qantas’ Perth to South Africa service.

The Wellington to Brisbane route, included in the sale, will be flown by Qantas’ new Airbus A220 aircraft, the first time it will fly on an international route.

The new plane offers a more spacious interior with larger windows, fast and free Wi-Fi and 20% more overhead locker space, Qantas said.

The sale covers flights on various dates between January and October next year. There will be some blackout periods for the sale during that time.

The sale begins today and ends midnight on Friday, unless fares are sold out earlier.

Prices below are for economy class fares; however, the sale does include offers for premium economy and business on select routes.

Meanwhile, Qantas is a step closer to launching the world’s longest flights, connecting Australia with both London and New York via a marathon 22-hour non-stop journey.

The airline’s Ultra Long Range aircraft (A350-1000ULR) has an additional 20,000-litre rear centre fuel tank, making the historic non-stop flights possible.

Airbus has completed major production milestones on the A350-1000ULR aircraft at its manufacturing facility in Toulouse, France.

All key airframe components, including the forward, centre and rear fuselage sections, have come together, along with the wings, tail section and landing gear now attached.

The aircraft was set to be transferred to a new hangar this week, where it would have engines and flight test instruments installed ahead of an extensive test-flight programme starting next year.
