It was something new for the Ruamahanga Ramblers when they held a cross-country event on the Greytown rail trail on Saturday.
The trail is a mixture of line and gravel and provided excellent footing for the runners and walkers, many of whom were unaware there used to be a branchline from Woodside station to Greytown.
Unfortunately the information panels and historical photographs were at the far end of the trail so only the social walkers had a chance to read them, everybody else having to turn back towards the race finish before then.
