Psychics from across New Zealand are lending their second sight to a Masterton couple now looking for their beloved missing pet Trina.
Lesley Milne said their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel ran away from a building site in the Southey Road area that husband Mal Gibson was overseeing near Rathkeale College a
week ago.
The couple adopted Trina and kennel mate Trixie a year ago through the Wairarapa SPCA after the two dogs were rescued from "a prison camp for dogs" in Taranaki, as a district court judge described it.
The spaniels were among a handful of survivors saved from the Taranaki property at which many cats and dogs were neglected and abused, she said, with another two rescued animals also finding new homes in Masterton.
As a result of the abuse and neglect, Mrs Milne said, Trina was left blind in one eye, deaf, and with only four teeth.
"Mal has looked out near that area several times every day since Trina ran off. I've been looking for her every day over lunchtime and we walked out there for hours at the weekend ... searching.
"We've advertised, contacted vets and the pound, and distributed hundreds of flyers. We're even working with psychics who have contacted us since we put Trina up on TradeMe and the petsonthenet website," she said.
"A dog whisperer in Paeroa has contacted us as well, even. I'm not sure whether I believe the psychics or not but we're willing to try anything to get her back.
Mrs Milne said two psychics have told the couple their missing pet is at a school and yesterday a Times-Age delivery driver was the second person to make a sighting of a similar dog near Rathkeale College, although Trina remains lost.
"Either she's dead or she's getting food from somewhere. She is a very timid creature and we are not about to stop searching for her we'll just widen our net," she said.
"We will keep looking. We're not just going to give up on her."
