Now a senior sergeant, Mr Morris has been in the force for more than 20 years and is considered a role model by his Wellington community.
When he can, he volunteers his time to teach kids soccer and Brazilian jujitsu.
For his dedication to the police and his community, Mr Morris has been nominated for a Pride of New Zealand Award in the Emergency Services category.
"Matthew Morris is only too happy to help," his nominator said. "He goes out of his way to give informal advice to assist, not only on police matters, but with whatever comes to hand."
Mr Morris was surprised by his nomination and said he could think of "20 other cops better than me".
He decided to become a police officer after experiencing "dull" part-time office work while studying sociology at university. "I actually just wanted an interesting life."
When it comes to disasters or when people are "running away", Mr Morris' instinct is to "go to where they are running from".
The father of two is now based at the Wellington District Headquarters.
His philosophy is to help frontline police officers do the best job they can.
"I need to focus on making their job easier, better, more efficient and getting them out there in the community. If I leave here having made a contribution or a big change to that, I'll be a happy person," he said.
