Pre-dawn blaze in South Island sawmill

Fire has engulfed a building at a sawmill near Motueka this morning.

Fire and Emergency southern communications shift manager Andrew Norris said the early morning blaze at Prime Pine was burning fiercely through one building.

He said the fire broke out around 4.45am.

Four fire crews and rural units were battling the blaze, which had been contained to one of the sheds on the site.

At this stage no other property on the Little Sydney Rd mill was threatened by flames.

Norris said it was unclear how the blaze started.
