A mystery man found in an Auckland carpark with bad head injuries was still alive today but police said his chances of survival were 50-50.
The man has yet to be identified and police have issued his description and appealed for public help.
He had an emergency operation yesterday to remove ablood clot from his brain but police spokeswoman Andi Brotherston said his survival was still classed as marginal.
She said he was either bashed or suffered some of his head injuries when he fell in a Ponsonby carpark.
He is thought to be in his 50s, is about 175cm tall with a pale complexion and a trimmed full grey beard.
Both pupils appeared irregular in size, suggesting the man had an eye operation, possibly for glaucoma.
He was wearing black Interchange label track pants with a string cord waist, a blue and terracotta patterned jumper, a grey fleecy hooded top and Conquest brand gym shoes. He also wore a Timex watch and carried a black umbrella with a curved wooden handle and a small leather key holder with three keys.
Police said the man may live in Herne Bay or Ponsonby, possibly in shared accommodation.
