Rangitikei councillor calls it quits

Rangitikei District councillor Mike Jones will not stand for re-election this year after three terms in the position.

Councillor for the Marton ward, Mr Jones announced on Sunday he would not make himself available for re-election following "careful consideration".

"I consider that three terms is enough without becoming stuck in a 'same stuff, different triennium' kind of mindset that does, in my opinion, occur from time to time," he said in a statement.

"I will, however, miss the opportunity to address the unique challenges that a small population with a large area provides."

Mr Jones said he would also miss his interaction with the public, fellow councillors, and the "awesome level of service, professionalism, and enthusiasm that the council staff provide".

"I have worked with many people in my lifetime but I can honestly say that the staff at the Rangitikei District Council are among the best ever."

He never experienced "huge egos or personal agendas" around the council table.

"In all my nine years it has always been a collective, dedicated effort to do the best for the district, and I certainly hope this continues."

Mr Jones wanted to acknowledge those who supported him over the last nine years.

"I sincerely hope I have met your expectations. It has been a humbling experience and one which I will never forget."
