A scene examination at a Napier school where a young boy was seriously injured after falling out of a window earlier this week has been completed - but police are still not disclosing what caused the incident.
The 9-year-old boy remained in a critical condition in Auckland's Starship Children's Hospital this morning, where he was transferred from Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital on Monday night.
The Taradale Primary School pupil was injured after somehow falling out of a school window while playing. His shirt is believed to have caught on something, leaving him hanging.
Emergency services were called to the school at 1.15pm on Monday after the boy was found having difficulty breathing.
Police today said they had finished a scene examination at the school, and were satisfied the incident was "an unfortunate accident".
"We have completed our examination of the scene and we have found nothing untoward that could have contributed to the boy's injuries," Detective Senior Sergeant Marty James said.
"However, we still need to speak to a few more pupils to try to confirm what happened in the lead-up to the boy's fall."
The school's board of trustees chairman Steve Alexander said the school was focussing on supporting the family and the wider school community.
"The family have asked everyone to respect their privacy and we have agreed to that. As expected, this is a very traumatic time for them and we are helping them in any way we can," Mr Alexander said.
Pupils who may have been upset by the incident had been offered specialist support services, he said.
The school had co-operated fully with the police investigation and the Ministry of Education.
