A major manhunt is underway in Waikato after police exchanged gunfire and ran for cover after officers were shot at by occupants of a car they were chasing.
Police say Morrinsville residents are right to be vigilant, with a suspected gunman still on the loose and potentially armed.
A sole officer was shot at on Kuranui Rd in the early hours of yesterday morning, after he pursued a driver who was speeding through town.
The gunman then exchangedgunfire with two officers who came to the first officer's aid and then fled the scene.
Police are speaking to two occupants of the car but have launched a massive manhunt for the driver, who had been armed with a military-style, semi-automatic weapon.
This morning, Waikato police Detective Inspector Graham Pitkethley said police were "following lines of inquiry" to find the gunman.
"The focus of the investigation team continues to be on locating the offender and Waikato Police are being supported by staff from other Police districts.
"The scene examination is ongoing at Kuranui Rd and is expected to be completed later today."
Two people - a man and a woman - also found in relation to the incident, were still continuing to help police with inquiries, he said.
Police were still keen to hear from anyone who had seen the vehicle - a red, 2015 Holden Commodore registration 1 ASIF 1 - the trio were travelling in to contact them immediately.
"We would like to hear from anyone who has seen the vehicle in the area recently or has any information relating to it - no matter how small or insignificant you think it may be.
"Information can be reported to Waikato police on (07) 858 6200 or reported anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
Yesterday, Waikato police Superintendent Bruce Bird said it was the most frightening attack on police officers he's encountered in his 40 years in the force.
He says everybody should be vigilant because they don't know what the mindset of the offender is.

She says everyone needs to lock their doors, look out for their neighbours, be vigilant, and try to stay safe.
A scene examination at Kuranui Rd, on the outskirts of the Waikato town, is expected to continue today.
The road will stay closed between Avenue Rd and Scott Rd until police have finished examining the scene.
There have been no further updates from police overnight other than to confirm the gunman is still on the loose.
