Police treating South Westland death as unexplained after body found

Police are investigating after a person was found dead near a vehicle in South Westland.

West Coast area investigations manager Detective Senior Sergeant Brent Lyford said an officer made the discovery about 4pm yesterday in Whataroa, north of Franz Josef.

“A police officer located a person deceased near a vehicle, near Parkers Creek,” Lyford said.

“At this time, the death is being treated as unexplained.“

An autopsy is due to be carried out later in the week.

“Members of the Whataroa community can expect to see an increased police presence as investigations continue.”
