Police set up toll-free number for investigation into attack on woman at a Riverhead quarry

Police have set up a toll free 0800 number as they continue to seek information from the public following the vicious assault of a woman in Riverhead early on Sunday morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kim Libby, of Waitemata Police, said the response from the public so far had been outstanding, with more than 50 calls received by the inquiry team.

Messages and private messages have also been sent to the Waitemata Police Facebook page following the incident, in which an injured 23-year-old woman woke in a quarry partially naked with a man standing over her with a bat.

Inquiries are continuing and a toll-free number - 0800 605 506 - has been set up for people to continue calling with information.

"We're still after any information about the car seen driving into and leaving the quarry, or any information about the man seen at the petrol station in the footage we released on Monday.

"We've had lots of feedback about the car seen in the footage. We've consulted with automotive experts and believe the car could possibly be a 2008 Ford Mondeo, but we still need to keep an open mind."

Police can also be contacted anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The inquiry team was continuing to gather and review CCTV footage from the Central, West Auckland, Ponsonby and motorway areas.

The attacked woman was last seen in Ponsonby about 10.20pm on Saturday before she woke, beaten and battered, with the man standing over her, four hours later and 25km away near Riverhead Forest, north of Auckland.

Police are still searching for a man seen on CCTV footage speaking to the woman about 10.20pm near a Mobil service station at the corner of Ponsonby and Karangahape roads.
